There can be three types of deviations in a CNC machine that affects its precision, such as spindle rotation deviation, drive chain deviation, and rail deviation. These deviations occur due to uneven wear, rotation, or assembly of the machine and directly affect its manufacturing accuracy.
Tool Geometric Deviation
Tools are prone to wear during the continuous cutting process, which can change the shape or size of the parts. The deviations vary according to the tool type. For example, a faulty fixed-size tool will affect high-precision machining, whereas general tools won’t.
Fixture and Jigs Deviation
Fixtures and jigs help manufacturing parts correspond to the accurate position of the machine; any deviation in their position or performance can cause machining errors.
Position Deviation of Manufacturing and Machining
Multiple geometric elements are selected as a positioning reference to cut tools according to their specified dimensions. When these elements (or positioning reference points) are inaccurate, they cause misalignment and positioning inaccuracy. As a result, you’ll get irregular-sized or shaped parts.
CNC machines and manufacturers require accurate measurements during or after processing. Things like gauge accuracy, measurement methods, etc., can cause measurement deviation and show inconsistent results.
Besides machine deviation or misalignment, there are other factors that affect the high precision of CNC machining. These factors include materials used, machined objects, and vibration (because it can produce variation). While you can control many factors, some changes are inevitable, which affect accuracy and precision by a few microns. That’s why manufacturers define a certain level of acceptable tolerance.
